The Ijaw people are a unique set of people located in the south-south geo-political zone of Nigeria. The language they speak is called Izon. These people are hosts to Nigeria's oil exploration companies and as such have suffered great negligence from different governments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Primarily, the main occupation of the Ijaw people if fishing because of the availability of rivers around them. Although this vocation has (and is still been) threatened by the activities of the oil exploration companies, the Ijaw people, known for their ability to endure difficult situations are still surviving.
The general misconception about the Ijaw people is that they are voilent and very retive, but in contrast, they are friendly and tolerant. Or how ellse would one describe the people who provide the country's economic backbone (crude oil) and have been netlected, marginalized, and sidelined for over fifty years. The revenue generated from their environment is used to develop other parts of the country while they suffer from water pollution from the activities of the oil companies.
